Compare/GreenCrew vs Uptime Kuma
Uptime checker vs Uptime checker (self-hosted)
GreenCrew vs Uptime Kuma
Uptime Kuma is the honest answer to “can I just run it?” Yes. Docker Compose, a web UI, push checks for cron, a status page if you expose the port. GreenCrew is the honest answer to “I do not want to run it.” We exist because a checker on the same VPS as the site will go dark together.
Side by side
| Topic | GreenCrew | Uptime Kuma |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Early products that need to know if a URL is up and a page they can hand to customers when it is not. | People who already self-host, want many monitor types, and accept that the checker is another box they own. |
| Not for | Platform teams buying APM, log pipelines, or multi-step browser synthetics. | Founders who did not want another container, or who need a status URL that stays up when their VPS does not. |
| Hosting | Hosted | Self-hosted |
| What it checks | HTTP(S) on a 1, 5, 15, or 60 minute schedule. | HTTP, keyword, TCP, DNS, Docker, push/heartbeats, and more — depending on how you configure it. |
| Status page | Public page at greencrew.space/yourhost, with 90-day history and manual reports. | You can expose a status page from the same instance. It lives where you deployed it. |
| Alerts | Discord, Slack, email, and SMS — in progress. | Huge list of notification backends if you configure them. |
| Complexity | Simple | Simple software, operationally yours. |
| Pricing shape | Free while we keep it simple. | Free software. You pay the VPS, the backups, and the time. |
What Uptime Kuma actually sells
Kuma is loved because it is capable and free. Heartbeats, many protocols, notification plugins, and no vendor roadmap. Homelab and indie-SaaS posts treat it as infrastructure, not a subscription.
Where they overlap
Both show up/down for HTTP. Both can have a public-looking page. Both are aimed at people, not platform teams.
Where they part
If Kuma’s host dies, your monitoring dies. That is the self-hosted deal. GreenCrew is outside your network on purpose. Kuma will always have more check types than we do. We will always be the option that does not need a backup plan for the monitor itself. Manual reports are also ours: Kuma believes the probe unless you build something extra.
Who should pick which
- GreenCrew: You want monitoring that does not share fate with your VPS, and a status page you did not have to TLS yourself.
- Uptime Kuma: You already self-host, you want push checks and extra protocols, and you will keep the box updated.
